This also reminded me of the Indexed comics.
I find this especially interesting when you extend the graph into 80’s and beyond. It seems the alcohol drops and cakes rise in importance. Witness the 100th birthday celebrations you’ve seen on TV. They have huge cakes and tiny glasses of booze, if there’s alcohol at all. It’s as if we go full circle as we age, back to cake and diapers.

Doug you are the best. And FYI I am celebrating for three days this year. I however have followed the chart and am suffering today.
Giraffe, I think I’m ahead of you–looks like the nexus between alcohol and cake is approximately 13 hash marks–2 years per, judging by when the alcohol line starts…they cross at age 24? was a long time ago for me.
I personally consider a “bad” birthday one where I get cake instead of alcohol. And when someone hits my car…and the hospital is not BYOB. I hate hospitals.
hey, thanks doug!!! my sentiments exactly. i was in a workshop yesterday with photojournlists here in the Philippines and there was an overflow of beer, hard drinks and good conversation. stayed up till august 31st morning. bestest birthday so far! your cartoon greeting is definitely a BIG SINFULLY DELICIOUS dollop of icing on the missing cake!
