Savage Chickens - Sixth Anniversary!

This Sunday, I’m celebrating six years of Savage Chickens! Here’s my annual cartoon showing all of the characters who appeared in more than one cartoon in the past year. See how many you can identify!

This has been a really fun year for me. I’ve spent a lot of time behind the scenes working on Savage Chickens: A Survival Kit for Life in the Coop, which is coming out in a month and features mostly all-new cartoons created especially for the book! Working on the book got me experimenting with new ideas, and I started drawing larger cartoons this year, such as 3″ x 5″, 3″ x 10″, 3″ x 20″, 3″ x 25″, and even 12″ x 12″. I hope you’ve enjoyed the longer cartoons – I’m having a lot of fun trying new things.

Your Top Ten
These were the most-visited cartoons during the past year:

  1. Chewbacca
  2. Hallucinations
  3. Curling Revisited
  4. Making a List
  5. Brick House
  6. NSFW (on my Top 10 last year; this year, it’s on your Top 10!)
  7. Abacus
  8. Tigger (its third year on the Most-Visited list!)
  9. Totally
  10. Time Travel

Doug’s Top Ten
Here are my top picks (alphabetically) from the rest of the past year’s cartoons:

Anyway thanks for your continued support and for making this past year so much fun. I couldn’t do this without you!

Did your favorite make this year’s top ten lists? Post your favourite cartoon(s) in the comments and you could win Doug’s new book and Savage Chickens artwork! Update: Winners announced!

    G’day doug.

    Sam-I-Am from Down Under here

My absolute favorite is the one with the spider in bed… he pretends to be asleep so it will go away, he closes his eyes, the spider crawls on his head, he opens his eyes and says, “phew!”. My kinda humor! ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s one of 20 some hanging in my cube.

    https://www.savagechickens.com/2010/11/bad-people.html

If I win I would give it to my daughter. We all need a little optimism sometimes. Thanks again and congratulations on 6 hilarious years!

My favorite is The Spider which is pretty wierd because I am scared of spiders. I actually cut the cartoon out and posted it in my house. That whole spider series was so funny! I love getting a cartoon a day. It’s a great way to start the day–with a laugh. Thanks, Doug! Love The Chickens!

Congrats Doug on six years! As a project manager, I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed ‘waiting game’ – my entire team got a good laugh out of that one (I also told my boss that our board room would make a lovely ping-pong table). But ‘Captcha’ tops my list. The stare back at the “camera” in box 5 cracks me up everytime. So true, and so hilarious.

Congrats on keeping the series going for so long! I’ve been reading since near the very beginning, and it’s been a pleasure to see how your talents have evolved. Keep it going!

Thanks for the funnies and keep up the excellent work!

I found this awesome website while I was deployed a few years ago. My husband was deployed for all of 2010 and I started forwarding your cartoons to him and he would print out some of them. That one was funny.

It brings a smile to my face each and every time…and sometimes I really need that little giggle before I begin my day. My two faves of are quite recent ones…the Hang In There cartoon with the revealing truth of the cute 1980’s poster of the kitten hanging from the vine by its paws, only to be hanging over the hungry mouths of two crocs (shattered my whole youth being that I had that poster in my room as a kid..hahaha), and the one from yesterday! I LOVE the list of things that the neighbors do to disturb the peace in your humble abode….and I plan on using it frequently…in fact I wish I’d had it last weekend when my neighbors bass from his thrash metal was bleeding through my walls….so thank you Doug and keep up the fantastic work that keeps us laughing at life! Cheers, Laura Peters

    Customer: โ€œWith what? I havenโ€™t ordered yetโ€
Tom: โ€œSorry, Sometimes I zone out and just go through the motions.โ€
    Tom: โ€œJackassโ€
    Tom: โ€œWhoops. Did it againโ€

My second runner-up was โ€œYar, I hate trackinโ€™ me billable hoursโ€. I work in a law firm. Billable hours is our cross to bear.

And, finally, I seen an ad in a Denver area local paper, Westword, that you really need to do something with Savage Chickens. The ad says, in big letters, FREE VASECTOMY. For info log on to ********.com EGAD! Thatโ€™s just the type of service Iโ€™m looking to get done FREE!

It is also right next to my monitor, right under you, and Maxine: โ€œWell, arenโ€™t you just the most adorable black hole of need.โ€

Have a great day, and thanks for the chuckles.

  188. Tracy says:

    https://www.savagechickens.com/2010/08/interrogated.html#comments

“Bad Cop / Guilt Cop” hit a funny nerve with me. I was chuckling about that all day long. I saw some ‘cop’ show that night and started laughing again during a scene where a suspect was being questioned. I made the comment to my girlfriend “His mother is going to be so disappointed” and she looked at me like had just grown another head. ๐Ÿ™‚

  229. Kit Mason says:

Your cartoon in my inbox brightens my day — I can’t tell you which is my favorite, because I haven’t seen any that I didn’t like. But I do like the time travel cartoon.

    Doug,

I might say that I couldn’t decide for only ONE winner as the best cartoon.
I’ll have to go with the entire Pirate Week (2010 sep 11-19) as always, and Business Lessons From Zombies (2010 march 30, 31).

    Rgds,

  238. Julia says:

I loved the Neighbor Noise one. Reminds me of my neighbors who clomp up and down the stairs, and my coworker who chomps his gum with his mouth open. *squirms*

    Good luck with your book

  240. Matt M says:

My favourite of ALL TIME has got to be “The Pedestrian’s Guide to Canada” – ridiculously true!!

However, I am still in love with the Cat Adventures series! So freakin true – I thought you were spying on my cats. I showed this to my cousin in CA, and he got inspired to take weekly pictures of his cat on Saturdays (Caturdays) every week to post on…probably the worlds most boring LiveJournal…

Anyways, keep up the good work!

  241. Ronnie says:

    Thanks for a great year!

I’ve been a big follower for years, and often show your comics to my coworkers.
During the past year, you had an excellent employee/boss one called “Most with least” that stated they were going to suck the oxygen out of the building. I printed it, and posted at the hospital where I work the very day they informed us that due to technical problems the air systems were going to be shut off until further notice. It so perfectly timed it ended up being sent to every dept. which i’m sure gave your site a boost!

  245. Lucy says:

    https://www.savagechickens.com/2010/04/ultimate-badass.html

Great cartoons, brighten my day every day I check my email to see another savage chickens!

  246. KMB says:

anything having to do with Star Wars gives me a giggle, as my sons are totally into them. (strange; i thought only MY generation would know the fun of being into Star Wars – and yes, i’m talking about the REAL Star Wars, episodes 4, 5 and 6 – and yet each son, in his own time, found the fun of the series. althought i don’t know how they can, when THEIR Star Wars experiences consists of episodes 1, 2 and 3.)

The best part about this contest is that I got to re-read all of the cartoons for the year again! It was a tough choice, but I have to go with Abacus.

  266. Ian C. says:

Congratulations Doug! I can’t possibly say I have one absolute favorite since so many are classic; however I will say that One-sided Argument from May 12th is genius!

I have pre-ordered a copy of the book through Borders, but a signed copy would be soooooo awesome. I have to say the “guy behind us is driving like a maniac” is my ALL time favorite from you. IT’s the one that hooked me in. Thanks so much for having the contest!!! Your humor is the best….. THE BEST!!

  282. You’re making me choose????? Noooooo! I love them all so much because you have raised the intrinsically funny chook* to the great observer. And a zombie. I love these so much I read them to Boris, Dicken, Piskie and Tinkerbelle (my hens) and to Fred, Tiger, Muggsie, Sophie and Dior, my cats.

I thought Cat Adventures was hilarious, and the first spider one was creepy and hilarious, and I loved the dog blaming one (because it’s true) but as a writer I can’t go past all of the writery ones. Especially the nerdy writery ones, and if I have to choose which one I would have framed to hang in the study, it would have to be

    Poet-Bot doing haiku

    *translation from Australian: chicken

  283. Simon says:

Happy Bear “SHARING” (inappropriate sharing Bear)I love Happy Bear. I need him. Please make more!

  300. Mic Smith says:

Captcha — my favourite because of sentiment and timing. (The day before this cartoon post, my husband came home from work cussin’ the captcha he had tussled [and tussled] with that day.) Usually I find mind reading sort of invasive and creepy, but that made my day.

  301. Bananaby says:

A close tie between cat adventures and time travel (being both a cat lover and an avid watcher of Doctor Who)

But you can’t bet the classics like the first appearance of Timmy Tofu ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for brightening each and every morning!

Still love Ninja Nightmares. But, the Shakespear series are my favorites.

  326. Jason Lee says:

    always a fun read

  327. Noam says:

My favorite was curling. I actually used that line on an unsuspecting co worker.

  328. Hilda E says:

My favorite cartoon was the one about Rick Astley’s song “Never gonna give you up”. Too funny! Keep them coming!

  329. Talyn says:

    Hi!

After eeny, meeny, mini, moing my gazillion favorites, I must say “Me Calling” (March 1, 2010). Apparently, it is the favorite of the “baristas” at the coffee shop I frequent, too. They want to put it on their counter. I currently have it taped to my laptop and must say that a glass frame would suit it more. To another 6 years plus!

  330. Niik says:

I loved the sneaky ‘literacy day’ joke. I’m ashamed to admit it took me a while to get it, but I loved it once I did. ๐Ÿ™‚

  331. Cindy says:

I look forward to your comic each weekday, but Cat Adventures had me hoping each day for a new episode.

  332. Jeff Collier says:

Congrats on your sixth anniversary. I’m a latecomer, but always look forward to your chuckles.

“Abacus” would be a great one for a recovering software engineer.

  333. connie says:

I love Prod 3000. He is CCO at my company. Really.

  334. I love cat adventures! ๐Ÿ˜€

  335. Mike G says:

I don’t know the title, but my current computer desktop wallpaper is “If it makes you feel any better, I’m sick of looking at you all day too.”

  336. Gina says:

I love them all! I can’t let a work day go by without my Savage Chickens. This last week rocked–loved the “concerns about second-hand smoke soon expand to include other dangers” i.e. inane conversation…along with the “lesser known songs of Nancy Sinatra”…these boots are made for goldfish! Okay, but one that particularly cracked me up, that I had to post to my FB page was the Winter Olympics Demonstration Sports Suggestions….ice breakdancing…fireside hot chocolate (looks like Belarus is out-relaxing Norway!). It’s impossible to pick just one! Congrats on 6 great years, Doug!!

  337. Brett says:

I WOULD LOVE A SAVAGE CHICKEN BOOK!!!
    WOO!!

  344. Susan_rn92 says:

I found it hard to pick one favorite. But after attending Curling at the Vancouver Olympics and explaining rules of curling to many eager, excited people who knew next to nothing about the game. We laughed and laughed and “Curling,”and “Curling Revisited.”

A conversation at the Olympic curling semi finals,

Two guys from California sitting beside us, “If the Scotish invented the game, why aren’t they in the playing in the finals?”
Us, “They weren’t good enough to beat the Canadians.”
Two Scotish guys sitting in front of us with sour expresssions, “Ach, aye lads.”

  345. Katie Beth says:

Woohoo! I can never decide on my favorites, but I really like Inconvenience Mart.

  346. Barbara CN says:

My favorite one is ‘hang in there’..reminds me to look at the whole picture… not just that you see the tree, but not the forest…

It implies good suggestion for decision-making.

  347. Chris Knowles says:

Each and every cartoon brightens up my mornings! I look forward to every installment, no matter what it is. I quite like the office based ones like Waiting Game and Honest Question because they remind me so much of my own work and people I know. My favourite is Cat Adventures I think.

A great new way to Rick-Roll someone!!

  359. For me the Cat Adventures are absolutely spot on – You couldn’t film a more accurate picture!

I get your daily mail into my inbox at work and for those few seconds it takes me to read the cartoon, the rest of the world just dissappears.

I forward your daily email to a group of chicken loving friends via the above website. We are all part of the ex-battery hens forum here .

Thanks Doug, here’s to many more years of receiving your drawings.
