Why Do Cats Stare at Walls?

I’ve known a few cats who do this. What’s the big idea, cats? Are you just trying to freak us out?

More cat cartoons.

Update: Here’s the sketch that led to this cartoon!

I’m pretty sure my cats and my walls secretly fight, too. That would explain the torn wallpaper.

I call this cat behaviour ‘pretend ghost’. Cat stares at nothing. You look to see what cat is staring at. Cat continues to stare. You look again, you eventually get a cold shiver up your spine and get freaked out. Cat wins. (Unless you say “You’re playing Pretend Ghost” to cat BEFORE you freak out – then YOU win and cat will walk off in a huff.)

Cats can hear things that we cannot – my cat helped me to discover a rat infestation at my old place by staring at the portions of wall that housed their nests!

  16. Claire says:

I have decided they are only watching their “floaters.” After I had a torn retina, my floaters have increased in size and number to the point that I have named them and can spend hours watching them, which annoys my cats no end. (What IS she looking at!?”)

  17. Karen says:

    Fiona so has it right!!!
(Doug, this made me laugh out loud at my desk at work, giving away that I was not looking at a “spreadsheet.” I blame you if I lose my job. ๐Ÿ˜‰

One of my cats used to play with the wall, right at the crack where it meets the floor. She took the reason why to her grave, sadly.

  19. Chris K says:

It is a mystery. You just can’t figure out what a cat is looking at and is so fascinating sometimes.

  20. Brian B says:

Cats can see through time. They are watching something that was there in the past, or will be in the future, but just happens not to be there right now.

  21. Wildbird says:

We used to have a siamese cat that would get on the TV and just sit up there

My cat Rocky actually follows something around Me! That’s kinda unsettling, but then I smile to myself and stand amazed. One more neat thing about him. (^_^)
