  9. Cassie says:

lol for some reason, I particularly like the juice box in that picture. YOU SHOULD MAKE A CARTOON ABOUT IT

  10. Lucy King says:

Why are obedience and conformity seen as necessarily bad or sad? That implies that disobedience and non-conformity are necessarily good and great. So not true. Without context, obedience and conformity are neither good nor bad. They’re just nouns.

    • Lucy, most parents wouldn’t say that the primary purpose of school is to teach obedience and conformity. The cartoon pokes fun at the fact that schools do little of what they pretend to be about (teach knowledge, skills and citizenship), and mostly teach obedience and conformity (and memorisation!).

Obedience and conformity without respectful dissent and scholarly inquiry are the lethal enemies of democracy. The trouble is that schools do not teach respectful dissent. They punish it.

  11. D Rahyb says:

Heck, the schools wouldn’t have to go to that extreme if the students learned respect for others before they stepped through the doors of the school!

  12. Doug says:

“If everyone’s thinking alike someone isn’t thinking.” General George S. Patton

It’s hard to grade and test for productive disobedience and non-conformity.

  13. No tests nor grades for Montessori kids. Just child-led joy of natural learning, for the sake of learning.
