This reminds me rather delicously of visiting Austria as a kid. We learned ‘Ein Eis, bitte’. But the very next most vital bit of language was ‘Noch ein Eis, bitte.’ Have a lovely time Doug and komm gut nach Hause.

I was really confused when I got to Germany and heard “zwo”, which I had never heard mentioned in any class or German language textbook. Merchants use that instead of “zwei” for clarity.

To understand that you should know, that “drei” three is and sometimes “zwei” and “drei” hard is to distinguish.

You might be surprised to find that German language textbooks actually DO cover numbers up to and beyond 3. They just do not always teach useful slang.

    • Leak says:

Oh boy – throw some dialects into the mix and you have “zwei”, “zwo”, “zwa” and “zwoa”… ๐Ÿ™‚
