happy sixhudredth birthday
second line has one
sylable too much. you should
count more carefully.
soo its good
That is very nice,
however, the second line
is a bit too long.
Congratulations on 600.
Doug don’t worry about that second line, it’s disputable. You know, poetic license and all.
I dunno, the word “entire” could be only two syllables depending on the pronunciation. Methinks some people are nitpicky.
Happy Six Hundredth! May there be another 600! And more!
Happy 600! That’s like, 4,200 in dog cartoons.
I don’t mind about the second line….I like em’ long. Er, wordy.
Hey, anonymous,
“entire” consists of only
two syllables, man!
I am missing the ‘extra sylable’ point. I count seven. Haiku is 2 I think. So isn’t entire. the count seems to be 2 1 1 2 1 which adds to 7.
Congratulations
Six hundred, huge achievement
Keep up the great work!
Doug, you’ve done outstanding work – congratulations!
Congratulations!
May the chickens never die!
Regarding line two,
Check your sources, folks.
“Entire” has TWO syllables.
Look it up and see.
woot, and may there be 600 nay, 6000 more.
I must disagree.
“Entire” has two syllables.
Look it up right here.
The second line is fine, since when does “entire” have 3 syllables? By the way: Congrats Doug!
YAY! Congrats on the 600th! So how many hundreds of $$ does that mean you’ve sunk into Post-Its?
Only seventeen
Syllables in a haiku
Boop boop skidoo yah!
AWESOME!!! 600 times you have made me laugh..chickens ROCK !!
the second is fine
if it is read as EN-TIRE
not as EN-TI-YER
Fans are debating
Whether ‘entire’ has just two
syllables or three
Let’s see what I count:
hai(1) kus(2) for(3) the(4) en(5) tire(6) day(7)
This looks right to me.
LOVE those SAVAGE CHICKENS!!!
the second line is FINE!
pronounce ENTIRE as 2 syllables!!!
Erm…no…you are wrong
The second line is just right
You should count again
are you pronouncing entire…en-ti-er?
or…is it ha-i-ku?
Sweet! Hope to see another 600!
definition says
length of second line is fine
some people need lives
One syllable off?
Only for a Southern drawl.
Speak a faster mile.
Syllables too much?
I only counted seven.
Does “haiku” have three?
I counted line two.
It has seven syllables.
Isn’t that correct?
Six hundred is a
Wonder, and a thousand is
even better! Thanks!
the entire crowd spent
too much time analyzing
pronounciation.
happy 600!
I really look forward to the sixty-sixth one after.
entire is 2 syllables – 3 sounds. tough call. technically correct but is it in the spirit of the poetry?
Then you have to remember that these are just chickens.
tasty tasty chickens…
Even the nitpicks
are written in haiku form.
Bravo, everyone!
But, I heard Haiku
was not supposed to read like
a sentence. Correct?
Congrats on making the 600 mark, Doug! I’m not going to pick apart your syllables, as long as you’ve got your chickens lined up. That is of far greater importance.
Haiku shmaiku why
who gives a damn when these fowl
are truly kickass.
Awesome! Congrats on the big 600. Keep ’em coming. 🙂
600 Posts Doug?
I have so much to see then!
Spend a day reading
Too many Comments
In 17 syllables!
Till this one, where the last line was far too long…
Yay! Happy 600 Doug. Although, I have to say some of your syllably-obssessed fans do scare me quite a bit. Haikus never fail to make me happy, though, mainly based on the fact that I can’t make them. And I’d also like to say that the two people who did say that entire is three syllables were on at 1:36 AM or so. It was early in the morning.
I LOVE YOU DOUG!
Curse your comic lots
All six hundred in one day
I have read through.
((By the way, dear friends,
Haikus are not always
Five, seven, then five.
Though it may simply be
Due to translation issues,
The form is sometimes skewed.))
five-seven-five form
myth though popularly true
limit seventeen
doug at 600
my heart beats a laugh each time.
smart, funny, hot? splash.
congrats and keep chicken-ing
Hate to say it, but there is a part of haiku that people often forget/don’t know, and this comic defiantly dosn’t do it. The third line in a haiku is supposed to be an image of some sort.
I love how only
the grammar–related ‘toons
cause controversy!
Thanks for all the great comments everybody! You people are awesome.
I think the debate about entire is funny. Especially because nobody is saying anything about Milestone being 2 or three syllables.
Yeah, Doug, I agree. You seem to have a lot of obsessed English freaks (myself included) in your cult following. Apparently OCD grammarians also tend to have a fetish for SC. Keep up the awesomely witty cartoons! And thanks for giving our syntactic skills a workout!
To “anonymous” – For the record, I did stick up for “milestone” being 2 syllables…. Actually I felt like a complete idiot for doing that, only to see everyone else focusing so much on “entire.” Regardless, SC are sheer genius. I think we can all agree on that.
heheh and I’m very surprised that nobody caught that I used “haikus” when the actual plural is “haiku”! bwahahaha!
Excellent work, Doug
Haiku’s suck at poetry
They should really die.
That seemed pretty hard.
Until I tried it myself.
Now it’s really fun!
Though other sources say otherwise, I personally disagree with the statement saying entire has two syllables. I say it has three (dictionaries be cursed).
Tire seems to be the point of contention, so I’ll elaborate on that. I DON’T think that tire is pronounced tie-ree, but rather that it’s often pronounced tie-er. Think of someone that ties stuff for a living. He’s a tyer. And in my opinion, he’s pronounced the same way as our mysterious tire. Though this may in fact be a mispronunciation, however, all the people I polled (a grand total of one household) did indeed pronouce it this way.
Thus, the word entire, with the addition of the syllable in front, makes for three syllables.
Also, Mr. Savage, I believe the plural of haiku being haiku wasn’t caught was most likely due to the foreign origin of the word.
Best Regards,
Lord Glathil
Post Script: Further review of Merriam-Webster.com’s entry for entire (along with the complementary audio pronunciation)leaves me to believe that entire is noted as having 3 syllables in the dictionary.
Savage Chickens Rock!
Keep Up The Terrific Job!
Happy Six Hundred!
(haikus are fun!)
tho9se are really bad except for the 2 one
I’d congratulate
You but it seems I’m too late.
Oh well, such is life.
