  2. buttercupboxer says:

patio? gazebo? walled garden of delights?

  3. Seraphine says:

I watched the movie Portico with Verandah until she decked me on the porch. I lenai on the ground for hours, terraced she’s come back. What am I? An uncomfortable Chicken with literary pretension.

  4. Anonymous says:

Ohh, I want the pretension of a Portico but with the confort of a Porch. I will call my invention a Porchico. 🙂

    Yep.

  6. SteveO says:

Dang! And all I got me to sit on is a stoop!

  7. Thomas says:

A deck is way more pretentious than a porch. You need to check your data.

  8. lseamans says:

What about the 0th level on the pretension scale??

Where is “stoop”? As in: “me & paw was sitting on the front stoop drinking moonshine”

  9. LostDog says:

Thomas, I disagree. Deck and porch are correct in the chart. I guess it depends on where your from. In my area this best describes a porch: “too small for comfortable social use and adding only to the visual impression of the building” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porch)

A deck is typically in the back and more private. You sit up front on the porch when you want to been seen.

Just wanted to drop you a quick line you let you know I’ve been really enjoying your cartoons! Bravo!

  11. philosopherva says:

lseamans — I thought a stoop was something you only had in the city. In Baltimore, lots of life happens on the stoop. Me and maw drink our moonshine on the front porch of the cabin. That way, we can be on the lookout for the revenooers.
Maybe I should make a run into Bal’mer and sell some moonshine to the folks on the stoop.

  12. ramonathepest says:

methinks a porch is less pretentious than a deck; however, a lanai is so much more exotic than a portico as to be off the charts

  13. Doug Savage says:

that’s funny – i had “stoop” in my notes but somehow it didn’t make it into the cartoon.

For me, I’d prefer a porch, but I’d call it a lanai cuz it sounds cool.

And I love the Porchico idea, C.

  14. Yorick says:

    Herman Melville preferred “piazza.”

I always thought that term got high marks for pretension

  15. Rick says:

It is clear that “porch” is ranked correctly at the highest comfort level, given that it is only on the porch that you can relax on the porch swing and set a spell. You know…like Andy used to do when he needed to talk to Opie about an important lesson he had learned that day. Aunt Bee knew better than to interrupt when important stuff was happening out on the porch, be it with Opie or with Helen Crump!
