‘Duelling Flutes’ as in ‘Duelling Banjos’ from Deliverance! Or perhaps as with fiddles in ‘the Devil Went Down to Georgia’. That’s a great little cameo of Patrick Stewart.
But it was Dr Who (Patrick Troughton version) who played the recorder. Did I miss the relevant episodes of ST/NG? I remember Captain Picard Day. Is there a flute in that?
You missed a few episodes. The one where he acquired it is a good one.

Aren’t those recorders, not flutes? Flutes are held sideways, AFAIK.
It’s a Ressikan flute! 🙂

They’re also very similar to a tin whistle, or penny whistle, on which the tune sounds pretty awesome!
A recorder has 7 holes (10 if you count the half holes and thumb hole).
The instrument that it’s most like is the tin whistle – there’s a good version here.
OMG, how did I not have Captain Picard Day in my list of dorky holidays? Definitely added for next year. A thousand thanks, Doug!
Nice! I look forward to seeing how you combine it with Vinegar Day and National Morticians Day! 🙂
