Marshall Fields, in Chicago, in the ’40s, used to have, in addition to enclosed passenger elevators, a line of three or four large, open-cage freight elevators. They were on the opposite side of the store from the enclosed ones, and we used to take them if we didn’t want to walk all the way across the store. As a youngster, I used to dream that those elevators could move sideways as well as up and down. Thanks for providing the recall catalyst!
Star Trek their elevators(Turbo Lifts) also went sideways
