It’s an illusion. People feel nostalgia for WW2 and the Cold War because they have forgotten how bad those really were — they ended well, and so seem better than the current uncertainty. In 20 or 30 years, people will long for “the good old days of 2020, when our problems really weren’t so bad.” Even now it would not be hard to find people saying, “I wish we were back in the early 2000’s. Remember how we all came together after 9/11?”
