Hopes…deleted. 🙁
Sadly true— The darkest times I’ve seen in my 78 years.
My apologies for a serious comment.
This really gets to the difference between St. Nicholas and Santa — aside from the fact that the first is real and the second is not. St. Nicholas understood joy, which is a deep, internal peace that can exist under the most terrible of external circumstances. Saint Maximilian Kolbe would have been full of joy as he was starved to death at Auschwitz. Happiness, on the other hand, is shallower and more superficial. Happiness has to do with external conditions. The word “happy” comes from “hap”, meaning “luck”. Happiness is what Santa is about.
There is a deep hope that corresponds to joy, and a shallow hope that corresponds to happiness. Christmas is about the deep hope. Decemberween is about the shallow hope.
