Cartoon request:
Make a chicken ask another chicken if a thing is cool or dumb, making the chicken answer by saying “Dumb.”
Derivative, certainly. Safe? That’s questionable; safe for whom and from whom? No one is making anything “safe” like a modern version of “The Andy Griffith Show”, derivative as that would be. Too often “safe” “safe for the CEO at cocktail parties with his counterparts”.
On some level, Production companies always want projects to be “safe,” safely doing the same thing that brought profit before to ensure that they will get profit next time.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens, derivative and safe.
Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker, derivative and bringing back palpatine was definitely a safe move instead of introducing a new villain or building upon the innovative plot that last Jedi was.
The Last Jedi was Innovative and risky.
Also happens in kids films:
Little Mermaid 2: Derivative and Safe
Wall-E: Innovative and Risky
But even though Wall-E was innovative, Pixar was safe, they had only 1 true failure at that point and that fail wasn’t even that bad financially.
Cinderella 3 is an oddity in the direct to dvd sequels in that it is actually kinda innovative and risky, and it’s definitely the best direct to dvd disney sequel… when you compare it with all the other sequels
I remember being so surprised at how good Cinderella 3 is the first time. Way better than expected for a Disney direct-to-DVD sequel 🙂
Okay, this is geeky, but I like how you’ve drawn the chicken’s comb from behind. 🙂
