  2. Stefan on July 1st, 2009 3:57 am

    a WHAT eating WHAT?

  3. Stefan on July 1st, 2009 3:59 am

Woah.. wiki lets me know that ookpiks are furby-owls, and that poutine is a dish that basically looks like a McDonald’s meal, post-digestion. I’ve never been happier not to be from Canada. :)

Hahahahaha, poutines!!! Strange things, they are.

    O Canada!
    Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

    From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

lol, it’s not funny if I have to look up ookpik and poutine…but on the contrary…it was funny.

  7. Dinana on July 1st, 2009 6:33 am

Happy Canada Day to our neighbors to the north!

  8. Gesner on July 1st, 2009 6:39 am

This is the second day in a row that I had to google the darned cartoon before I could laugh at it! Happy Canada day to you, too, Doug, keep up the good work!

  9. Chris on July 1st, 2009 7:01 am

    Mmmmm… poutine

  10. Peter on July 1st, 2009 9:14 am

Heh, I grew up just the other side of the border from Canada, and I have never heard of poutine before. Must be an eastern Canada thing.

    Happy Canada Day!

i’ve wondered why polar bears have been disappearing. everyone talks about global warming and melting glaciers, but it’s obviously heart disease that’s killing them. luckily… canadians have ‘free’ healthcare so they can eat anything they want.

  12. Om nom on July 1st, 2009 9:35 am

Yes! I commend you for not going for the obvious “beaver drinking beer”

what’s the American equivilent? Bald eagle eating disco fries?

  13. Rick Riebs on July 1st, 2009 9:46 am

I salute you, my neighbors to da nort, and pray to God Almighty we can avoid importing your “health care system!”

  14. Liz on July 1st, 2009 10:30 am

That’s where my Poutine went! Damn ookpiks are EVERYWHERE!

  15. shanadian on July 1st, 2009 1:35 pm

I must echo another person’s words: a WHAT eating a WHAT???

    What the HECK?

    This is a canadian moment.

And a moment of truth for me: I am not from Canada. Shanadian is a portmanteau that lies.

  16. OttawaRiver on July 1st, 2009 2:40 pm

Love it! Happy Canada Day to you, too, Doug!

    mmmmmm, poutine!

  17. Ada on July 1st, 2009 3:22 pm

I’m amused by the number of commenters here who had to look up poutine! Doug, the ookpik should be wearing a touque and sitting on a chesterfield too. :D

    Happy Canada Day!

  18. Heather on July 1st, 2009 3:48 pm

Hahaha, that is too cute! And if you have not had a poutine, you absolutely have to try it. True, not the most appetizing-looking dish in the world, but it is too delicious for words!

And oh yeah, Canada kicks butt!!

  19. Duplex Frane III on July 1st, 2009 5:46 pm

As an inhabitant of Canada, I can confirm that this cartoon is very true-to-life. It’s basically what I see when I look out my window, except that in real life Rex Murphy is also present, offering acidic commentary on the ookpik’s eating habits.

  20. HeidiRenee on July 1st, 2009 7:28 pm

Thanks - and to you too, eh!

  21. Doug on July 2nd, 2009 12:48 am

@Duplex Frane III - that Rex Murphy comment made me laugh for a ridiculously long time.

For those of you who haven’t tried poutine, it is cheese curds and gravy on fries and it is the most delicious food in the universe!

  22. Aviatrix on July 2nd, 2009 2:05 pm

OMG! Ookpiks! I had a cute furry one when I was a little kid, made with rabbit fur and leather, but it disappeared. I suspect that the cat stole it and probably buried it or left it in the yard or something. I didn’t know for the longest time that an ookpik was something beyond MY ookpik.

How wonderful to see one featured in commemoration of Canada Day.

    Chimo!

  23. gillian on July 2nd, 2009 3:37 pm

Please turn this into a mug!

  24. Brian on July 2nd, 2009 9:05 pm

    Canada has a day?

  25. lisa on July 3rd, 2009 12:19 pm

    Back off, ookpik! Poutine’s mine.

  26. Steph on August 9th, 2009 11:10 am

    Aw hahaha!!
This made me miss Canada. <3

  27. Maui Mike on January 19th, 2010 11:32 pm

Okay, the Ookpik was cute, but I made the mistake of looking up “poutine” on Wikipedia. They had f-ing PICTURES! Ooofah! Your people eat this stuff???? So… this must be like the haggis and Marmite of the Great White North, right? Oh well: the yanks put catsup on theirs.
