I believe that their common ancestor should actually be named “cake”.
Who ever heard of a snat? No, the common ancestor must be the cake.
Also, they both shed, and cough up undigested bits.
Larry Niven wrote about these as a common descendant in “A World out of Time”
So now we finally learn the second part to the saying, “The cake is a lie.” The omitted part is obviously, “Beware the snat!”
