On Remembrance day these stories bring home the terrible things that happen in war and the waste of life it brings.

    Thanks for the cartoon

… I regularly take walks to where the Henley Regatta is held. I think I’ll take another walk there today, and sit on a bench there and remember for a while.

Thank you, Doug. Says everything there is to say, really. My grandfather was an Ambulance driver in WWI. He didn’t speak of those years either.

    Absolutely wonderful strip today.

People nowadays forget that young men rushed to sign up for the world wars. My paternal grandfather served in WWI and my dad and three of his high school friends were the first from their hometown to sign up for WWII.

  15. Sara says:

    That was beautiful.

  16. Tom H says:

As a veteran, I greatly appreciate your sentiment. In our easy lives, it’s far too easy to forget the struggles and sacrifices that keep us free. Thank you to all veterans, no matter where you served!

  17. Matthew says:

Doug. You’re great at providing everyday entertainment for our lives. You make us laugh and smile. But I personally enjoy your posts like these. Sure it’s diverging from the norm, but it has meaning and it’s heartfelt.

    Thank you Doug.
    Thank all of the soldiers.

Thank you, Doug. Here in Middle Europe we sometimes forget that people from the New World helped us to fight for our future to have our own country. Thank you.

I’ve never cried over a comic before. As a former United States Air Force officer, I thank you for all of us.

  22. Jean Pfleiderer says:

    Doug!
You made me think of my father. It was WWII, he was a U.S. soldier, and he didn’t die. But, as he stepped out of the officer’s tent where he had just delivered a message, the tent was blown up behind him. Everyone in it was killed and he took a piece of shrapnel in the back that they had to take out of him from the front in the field hospital. He lost a piece of his lung. They sent him to Scotland for a month to recuperate and then put him right back in the war. What a terrible time.

I have visited Ypres, The Passchendaele Memorial site and The Somme, when I was 31. Very Humbling with an Air, I have read many historic facts but until you actually Go…., Was also surprised at some of the Other Allied Nations, With Respect from WALES,UK

  24. Thomas says:

Many thanks, again, for doing it right. I was at Kandahar for last year’s panel, which resonated hugely. This one touched me i just the same way. I appreciate your helping to make Remembrance Day exactly what it should be: a day of reflection, solemnity, thanks to those who have served and are serving, and remembering and respecting the sacrifices of those who “gave all.”
