Doug, congratulations on 4 awesome years – checking the day’s cartoon is the first thing I do before work each day; you’ve started every one with a smile, and sometimes a “fall-out-of-chair-laughing!”

All the Chuck Norris panels are great, I’m going to vote for Day of the Ninja stare-down! Though truly, it’s near impossible to choose a favorite….

  12. Jen says:

And I’ve been reading for about three. You rock. Thanks!

  13. Harold says:

    Great work on 4 years.
My favorite would be Frosty from dec 18th.

  14. Giovanna says:

Definitely million monkeys. I love the logic. Although the sky gnomes come in a close second.

  15. Jen says:

Oh, and my favorite(s) is the irrational fear series. =)

  16. It must be the French in me being attracted to the logic elements of Amazing.

  17. Furie says:

Happy Anniversary Doug. My favourite so far has to be Doorstep Ninjas. It’s so simple yet I crack up every time I see it.

  18. Katy says:

    Many Happy Returns!

My favourite is ‘Life Sucks’ – so much so that it’s my desktop wallpaper on my work pc…

  19. fr says:

Ok, i discovered you recently so i didn’t check everything, but my favorite one would be “Orientation”, about hell and wi-fi. I really fellt like a chicken.

  20. Rowley says:

    Hi,
You’ve made me laugh for some time now, I’d like to just thank you for making my work days happier.

I loved “How to Quit Your Crappy Job” (and sent the link to several friends of mine who were considering doing it!) but of the Top Ten list, my favourite is “Million Monkeys” – I get this image of a monkey in Shakespeare’s ruff collar…

  25. Doug Black says:

    Fun With Genetics 5!

  28. J.Sochor says:

Right now Million Monkeys is my favorite as Darwin’s 200th birthday is coming up (as well as the 150th anniversary of the publication of “On the Origin of Species”). He is perhaps the greatest scientist of all time and evolution is a beautiful theory that unites every living thing on this planet!

  29. Teal Cuttlefish says:

I found you about a year ago and promptly read all the back cartoons, giving up part of a night’s sleep to do so.

For this year, I’m torn between “Cubicle Future” and “The Bard.” Yep, I’m a Science Fiction geek. I even dream in SciFi, which makes explaining my dreams a real challenge.

  30. Claire says:

Definitely my favourite (& the one that resulted in an addiction to Savage Chickens in the office with lots of muttering under breath) is Raccoon vs Moon. Although I note, with dismay, that I can’t see Mr Raccoon in the celebratory cartoon above. Perhaps he was so annoyed with the caper, he protested being included…

  31. Aline says:

Happy anniversary — and many more!

One of my favourites, it’s hard to pick just one really, is Death Works From Home. Although if you ask me again tomorrow, or even in ten minutes, the answer might differ just because I cannot choose.

  32. Gavin says:

Happiness – The Blood Of Clowns one. By a long way.

You took up the baton from Farside when that stopped.

Now you and Dilbert run on alone together!

    PLEASE keep going!

    Gavin

  43. Yeti says:

Congrats, Doug! Your chickens always make my day.

I loved the million monkeys one; I had it on my desktop for months! Congratulations on four awesome years!

    :^D
    ~Corrie

I have to admit that I didn’t review all of the 2008 cartoons, although I have read them all at one time or another. I did glance at some of the choices that readers and also the creator–Savage Chickens’ creator, of course, not THE creator–and recall that cartoon called “Treehugger.” It’s one that I saved. Even though there may be a different one somewhere from 2008 that I may also have saved, I’m short of the time required to review a full year of cartoons, and , therefore, I’ll go with “Treehugger.” It’s at great cartoon!

    gmotisher@ yahoo.com

  83. GBM says:

I’ve only been subscribed for about three months now, but I really liked “Life is Grim” – not so much because it made me giggle, but because it expressed something in a way that I couldn’t put my finger on. Seems to me that’s the bar that should be set to qualify as art, and I was tickled to see that a simple webcomic had passed it.

  84. Brad says:

My fave is “Death works from home,” but there must be something wrong with me – my favorites are usually the hell / death ones. Definitely need one of your psychoanalyst panels to straighten me out…

I have the chickens emailed to me everyday and I love opening up that email in the morning. I have both “One Cloudy Day” and “Ultimate Dessert” hanging in my cube and it’s tough to pick but I’m going to have to give “One Cloudy Day” my vote. I remember laughing really, really hard when I read that one. I love a good surprise ending.

  108. Emily says:

Congrats! I like the one where Darth Vadar is the new defense against the dark arts teacher!

My favorite is always the current one… mostly because I have a short attention span from watching He-Man and Transformers cartoons as a child. But if I had to pick a runner-up, it would be chickenconversation. Because, unfortunately, that’s my life.

  116. Carol says:

I’ve been reading you since the early days and still waiting to see if the chickens ever go bowling. Out of the top 10 showing I must vote for Ultimate Dessert. Who can refuse Chuck Norris Roundhouse Ripple.

  124. Tim Canny says:

I’d like to see the comic that contains all the characters that were only featured in a comic once in the last year. I think that would be a most sad cartoon. :[

Hard to pick a favorite but in order to adhere to the rules of the game and possibly get a free mug I’m gonna say the Tigger cartoon. I always knew there was a sociopath hiding behind those stripes and those beady black eyes.

  125. Definitely the James Brown alarm clock. I walk around the office singing that whenever someone’s late!

Loved the popular Tigger and it got some coworkers to start reading regularly, but Fun With Freud is the only one I actually printed out this year. It appeared the same week I got “promoted” to running kid’s parties at work and I rival Freud’s inability to connect with them.

    -Dood

  223. Andy says:

I hate Chuck Norris jokes. I do. And I’m not fond of the actual guy either. But “It tastes like pain!” made me laugh, so I have to vote for “Ultimate Dessert”.

Congatulations on 4 years down and many more to come. Great cartoons, and picking one is hard. However, it came down to what helped me through the work day. I really enjoy the work related ones most and have made my husband a big fan (and he in turn has corrupeted,er, introduced his workmates).Given some of the supervisors each of us have had, your Prod3000 cartoons really hit home. I especially enjoyed your November 17th cartoon-Excellence in Management. I had a supervisor like that and still remember the feelings that she brought to her staff. I was never late but that didn’t stop the “quick look at the watch” given each time one of us came in. I think she was disappointed that we were punctual. Sigh

  245. Heidi says:

Doug – Usually my fav Chicken is the last one I read. But if I have to choose: “Writer Monkeys” still makes me laugh when I think about it. And Spork and Dawn of the Dead are the greatest of all time. Keep it up!

Doug, I’m so glad I found you! I love waking up and laughing at your crazy cartoons! Tigger, Something to Live For, Reinforcement, Barry White 8, and Endorphins are a few of the many that made me laugh out loud. If I were maimed, tortured, and threatened with chocolate deprivation in order to make a decision on the best one, I think I’d choose Reinforcement! Keep up the great work! ๐Ÿ™‚

  272. Clay Colt says:

For years when my (now 24 year old) son was a little kid, somehow that silly line from “Star Wars” about getting power converters from Toshi Station became a frequently cited family mantra – for no explainable reason. It just sounded so inane in & of itself, out-of-context. This was inthe 1990’s, and the second wave revival of the Star Wars Trilogy was in full swing, maybe. It was a meaningless phrase that took on no more significant meaning through repetition. But like any absurd, inexplicable bad habit, took on a life of its own. Blind repetition (like blind obedience) certainly did engrave that sentence deeply into the hard drive of out brains ands lives. And maybe somehow imbue it with prescience
So to find it again, all these years later in – of ALL places! – “Savage Chickens”, in 2008! well, it re-affirmed that there must be some Transcendent Cultural Significance Which Passeth All Understanding to that line. Or a god of small things like George Lucas. Or maybe just something to the idea of Industrial Light & Magic, besides George Lucas. Or that the imaginary national boundaries we take so seriously between U.S.A. and Canada are merely constructs of small-minded nationalists at home & as well as abroad. Or maybe some subliminal meaning that will only become clearer as civilisation approaches ever-closer to the apocalypse. The need for power converters must strike a common chord both here in the belly o’ the beast and to our friendly and polite neighbours to the northwho are less-enamoured of empire than we are. Oh, Canada. Oh, Bama. Oh Toshi Station. Thanks for the power converters. We needed them. Now we just need a national/bio-regional infrastructure we can plug those power converters in to, and begin to turn this global depression around, with sustainable energy, sensible, equitable and socially responsible financial and economic policy, investment. And long, non-negotiable prison terms for Bush, Cheney and Rove – the ultimate “savage chicken” hawks.

  273. Nancy says:

If I REALLY had to pick ONLY one, it would have to be Dance of Life!

  274. RogerR says:

Difficult to choose from such a good selection. “Death Works from Home” is just so simple but very funny: same goes for “Pi”.
Either of these represents the spirit of Savage Chickens to me.

  275. OttawaRiver says:

    Congrats on 4 years!

So hard to choose between “Bears” and “Death” (not sure what that says about me…), but, as I need to choose one, it’s gotta be “Bears”.

I’m going with Time Travel Taxi, it was one of my favourites and also gets my vote for “most wanted this to be real”. Thanks for the comics and congrats on four years.

  281. Karen Jacobs says:

From the list I love “Death,” but my favorite is “How to find a Narcissist.” You have so many great ones though that I can’t decide which to get on a coffee mug. It would rock if you came out with a set or two or four. Thanks for the great laughs everyday.

Congratulations in your fourth year! Please, keep it at least four years more! ๐Ÿ˜€

I sign my posts with “Introspectre”, so I felt identified when I saw the “Introspection” cartoon (July 9, 2008). Somehow it was “my” cartoon ๐Ÿ˜‰

  293. rachel micija says:

My favorite has to be Welcome to Happy Land with the Prozac plant dumping into the river, since I work for the local Water Authority. What’s the chance of us getting one of those plants to help our water supply? ; )

(Also, as a Obama fan since 2004, I have to also add Barrack to the Future as a fave!)

  294. tammy says:

  306. dig girl says:

Being an archaeologist, my fav from the past year was definitely “Like an Egyptian”

My Absolute Fav of all is “Monday Wish” it makes me laugh every time i see it!

  309. sean says:

I’m sorry to admit this (being the father of two younger children, I was constantly bombarded with Pooh books, movies and games) but I loved the ‘Homocidal Tigger’. I couldn’t function for at least ten minutes I laughed so hard at work (they thought I was having a stroke). What macabre delight. Now I am going to look up a good therapist and make an appointment. Sigh.

  315. MissK says:

Congrats on year number four, Doug!

It’s very difficult to choose favorites, but FIRE! tops the past year’s list for me. I work at a daily newspaper and we have been given classes in the “fine art” of Tweeting (I wish I was joking) as part of our multi-platform strategy. I printed out and hung up FIRE! in our common area, and everyone who sees it cracks up.

  316. Michael says:

Mine just misses the cutoff date, so I guess I’m just here to sing its praises:

    https://www.savagechickens.com/2007/09/writers-block.html

I write and teach philosophy for a living, and had always thought of the blank page as my mortal enemy. I love the inversion of that expectation here. Much joy has come my way from the Chickens.

  317. Gaia says:

    Congratulations from Rio de Janeiro(Brazil)!
    Thanks for making me smile.
    My favorite is “Good Times”.

  318. Johnett says:

Happiness is my favourite. I used to be in a clown troupe and I used to do the makeup for the entire group. At times, drinking their blood sounded like a very good thing, indeed.

  319. Barb Wright says:

I really liked “Good Times,” because it was subtle, yet ironic (don’t cha think?)…Best wishes on the comic – I hope to see more of Savage Chickens for many years to come.

    Happy anniversary, keep rockin’
    “Bears” !!! “Bears” !!!!

  322. momz says:

My cartoon favorite was the one that started it all for you & for me. Fear Of Peter Gabriel. It is about my favorite Rocker of ALL time, best album, coupled with chickens! Also it shows how you have matured as a cartoonist & yet still maintained that subtle, dark, confrontational existentialism, all in one little yellow square. Thanks 3M for the stacks of weak adhesive & thank you Doug Savage for the years of laughter. Many happy more years at your art.
    xxxooomomz

  323. AussiePeta says:

My favourite from last year was Santa “Exposed”.

Darth Vader as Defence against the Dark Arts is a close second. Actually they all appeal immensely, thank you so much.

  324. Adam says:

4 years? Where does the time go?

I have to profess my love for “Return to Happy Land”. Those smiling trees creep me out, but in a good way.
